FLAKY MEAT PIE

IMG_3026

Recently, our boys were home for take your child to work day.  They did the laundry, dishes, a bit of cleaning…all of the fun things a  Mommy does everyday!  Next was the fun part.  I asked them to visit Pinterest, search for their favorite meat, and look over the photos for a recipe that sounded delicious and easy to make.  They chose ground beef, and found this wonderful cross between Tortière and Shepard’s Pie, two of their favorites.  The kids completed a grocery list, found all of the items in the grocery store, and prepared the entire dish.  I suggested using frozen onions and carrots to make the pie even easier, and it was a keeper!  We made it again this week replacing the ground beef with ground turkey breast and it remained a hit. I’m going to have them search for and prepare recipes more often!

If you have difficulty finding the puff pastry as we did, try the frozen food aisle near the pies. Easy, flaky, and scrumptious!

Ingredients:

1 lb. Ground Turkey Breast

½ Cup Red Wine

2 TBSP Dry Gravy Mix

1 Sheet Puff Pastry, thawed

1 Small Onion, finely chopped

1 Carrot, peeled and finely chopped

1 Stalk Celery, finely chopped

1 TBSP Olive Oil

1 tsp Crushed Garlic

¾ tsp Thyme

¼ tsp Sage

2 TBLS Milk

Ketchup (optional)

Preheat oven to 400°.  Brown turkey in olive oil in a large skillet.  Add onion, celery, garlic and carrots and cook until softened.  Turn down heat and stir in gravy mix.  Slowly add red wine and stir until slightly thickened.  Stir in thyme and sage.  Lightly spray a deep dish pie plate with cooking spray and add meat mixture.  Place puff pastry on the top of pie, tucking edges in as needed.  Cut a small slit into middle of crust to allow steam to escape.  Brush the pastry with milk.  Bake for 30 minutes or until puff pastry is golden brown.  Serve with ketchup if desired.
